In order to play sports, according to the Ohio High
School Athletic Association, a student must have received passing
grades during the preceding grading period in a minimum of five
one-credit courses or the equivalent which count toward graduation.
Block scheduling does not change the calculations
of credit equivalencies as required by Ohio High School Athletic
Association bylaws. Courses taken over 18 weeks or 9 weeks carry
a factor of 2 and 4, respectively. Therefore, if a student takes
an English course during the first eighteen weeks only and receives
one credit for passing that course, that class carries and equivalency
of 2 (1 credit x the factor for an eighteen week course (2)=2).
