Albeit official records don’t exist,
it is hard to imagine that anyone who has ever played football
at Cardinal Mooney has had more tackles than Leonard Bartelmay.
Firstly, there are few 3-year starters and even fewer of those
were inside linebackers. Secondly, from ‘75-’77, Len as the “stopper”
in the middle on defense. His intensity, aggressiveness, and ball-hawking
talent were paramount to the Cardinals’ championship teams of
this era. Because of Len, few teams were able to muster significant
yardage or scores. Len combined size and speed to terrorize opponents.
His effectiveness was recognized by teammates and foes alike,
as evidence by Len’s two time selection to the All-SVC squad,
his two-time All-NEO honors, and his Honorable Mention All-State
award. Len is employed by the Mahoning County Engineers Department.
He and his wife Diane, are the proud parents of a daughter, Lauren.
