Despite playing on Mooney teams that hovered around
.500, Frank Coleman displayed “big-time” talent. Opposing defenses
keyed on stopping Frank but still couldn’t diminish his impact.
Frank parlayed fullback size with tailback speed to rush over and
around opposition defenses for 1,825 yards averaging 5.3 yards per
carry. He was virtually unstoppable in ‘64 and ‘65 as he recorded
back-to-back 1st Team All-City seasons. When scrutinized, Coleman’s
accomplishments hold up well compared to more recent Mooney backs.
Frank played in fewer games, had fewer attempts, and didn’t enjoy
the offensive juggernauts that others ran behind. Nonetheless, he
still ranks among Mooney’s all-time leading rushers. Frank attended
the University of Wisconsin on a football scholarship. Frank is
semi-retired and he and his brother, John, are real-estate developers.
He and his wife, Kathleen, have two sons, Brett and Ryan, and reside
in Spring, Texas.
