For eighteen years, from 1970 to 1988,
Cardinal Mooney was blessed to have outstanding backfield talent
in football and the right personnel to coach them. Tony Congemi
has been an integral cog during those years in the development
of the “Big Red Machine.”
Mooney enjoyed unparalled success during Tony’s tenure.
He has had a part in four state championships, a state runner-up
finish, two state-semi-finals, nine play-off appearances, and
13 Steel Valley championships. Coach Congemi turned out scores
of All-Steel Valley backs and helped develop Mooney legends like
Ted Bell, the Stoops brothers, and Bo Pelini. But maybe Tony’s
greatest coaching attribute has been his ability to take individuals
of less talented but determined athletes and turn them into productive
and sometimes over-achieving champions.
In addition, Coach Congemi has devoted 27 years of his life to
coaching the Cardinal Mooney baseball team.
With 39 years in education, he has taught at CMHS for the past
35 years. He is married to the former Geri Seman (CMHS alumna)
and has four children including Mooney Hall of Famer, Melanie
Congemi-Stitt.
