Ernie Formichelli Significant Contributions as Boy's Tennis
Coach
Ernie Formichelli boasts a win-loss
record that would any coach proud. In his eleven years leading
the Cardinal’s tennis program, Ernie’s teams won 82% of their
matches. He had two undefeated seasons to lift his record to 137-25.
His charges won the SVC crown three times and had players advance
to the regional all eleven years. Moreover, he had nine boys qualify
for the state tournament with a state championship in 1989. His
sectional and regional championships are too numerous to list.
Ernie was held in such high esteem by his fellow tennis coaches
that he was selected Mahoning Valley Coaches’ Association’s “Coach
of the Year” a remarkable seven times. Coach Formichelli helped
shape hundreds of young student-athletes into young men that all
Cardinal supporters can be proud of. He continues to affect young
lives everyday as Cardinal Mooney High School’s Social Studies
Department Chairperson. He is married to the former Vicki Scavina.
They have two children-Angela (4) and Anthony (7 months).
