"In my years at Mooney, I have
to say that Joe is one of my best boys---academically, morally,
and athletically--that I've coached. He's a top-notcher in all
respects." Those lauding words came from Jerry Kuzma, Gromada's
basketball coach. Joe Gromada gave many the fodder for praise
during his years at Mooney. He was a two-time basketball MP and
two-time All-City selection, All NEO and honorable mention High
School All-American in 1966. His single game scoring record lasted
for 25 years, and only fell after the advent of the 3-point shot.
Joe attended the University of Louisville on an athletic scholarship
and, before freshman eligibility, set and still holds the school's
freshman team scoring record at 26 ppg. He then transferred to
Xavier University playing varsity basketball (1967-1971). Joe
is a graduate of Cincinnati College of Medicine and a practicing
OB-GYN in the Cincinnati area. He is married to the former Karen
Kerkhoff and has five children. He is a regionally ranked Senior
Age Group tennis player.
