Speed kills..... and Steve Johnson’s
speed decimated many Mooney opponents in ‘80 and ‘81. Steve was
All-State Honorable Mention as a junior during Cardinal Mooney’s
undefeated State Championship 1980 season. After undergoing knee
surgery, he returned in 1981 to earn All-Steel Valley, All-State,
and numerous All American honors. Steve is still listed among
Mooney leaders in yards gained, touchdowns, and yards-per-carry
average. If not for Steve’s storied football career, he would
certainly be a Hall of Famer in track. He still holds both the
100m and 200m school records and established several statewide
meet records. Johnson attended at University of Michigan, lettering
3 years and played in the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Holiday Bowl.
He was also a 2 year letter winner in track. Steve is married
with 5 children. He works for General Services Administration
as the District Director of the Federal Protective Service operations
for the State of Michigan. He is also a Chief petty officer in
the U.S. Navy Reserve.
