Women’s
athletics are sometimes denigrated by detractors who ask “Yeah,
but what if they had to play against the boys?”
Mary
Lou Kachmer McGregor did compete against the boys and prevailed.When Mary Lou arrived at Cardinal Mooney, there was no
girls’ tennis team so she went out for the boys’ team and earned
her spot.Later, after a women’s team was started, she
teamed with previously inducted tennis teammate Janine Dascenzo
to challenge the elite of Ohio playing in the state tennis tournament
in Columbus.She also earned first team all-SVC honors her
senior year as the team captured both the SVC crown and the Tri-County
title.After graduation,
she served as a volunteer assistant coach for a year.
Mary
Lou is a Pediatric Ophthalmologist at Columbus Children’s Hospital
and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Ohio State University.She also maintains a private practice, does research, and
trains ophthalmology residents.Married to Dr. John McGregor, she has 4 children.
