Mary Lou Kachmer McGregor
Tennis - Class of 1979

Women’s athletics are sometimes denigrated by detractors who ask “Yeah, but what if they had to play against the boys?”

Mary Lou Kachmer McGregor did compete against the boys and prevailed.  When Mary Lou arrived at Cardinal Mooney, there was no girls’ tennis team so she went out for the boys’ team and earned her spot.  Later, after a women’s team was started, she teamed with previously inducted tennis teammate Janine Dascenzo to challenge the elite of Ohio playing in the state tennis tournament in Columbus.  She also earned first team all-SVC honors her senior year as the team captured both the SVC crown and the Tri-County title.    After graduation, she served as a volunteer assistant coach for a year.

Mary Lou is a Pediatric Ophthalmologist at Columbus Children’s Hospital and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Ohio State University.  She also maintains a private practice, does research, and trains ophthalmology residents.  Married to Dr. John McGregor, she has 4 children.
