John was the “center” in more ways
than one, of what many fans consider Cardinal Mooney’s best team
ever-the undefeated State Champion 1980 squad. In addition to
being one of the best offensive linemen in school history, John
was equally adept on the defensive line. John’s great strength
and aggressiveness served him well as he stood out as the dominant
force in the trenches in both his junior and senior years. After
being named to the All-SVC 2nd Team as a junior, John left little
doubt as to who was the area’s top lineman in 1980....All-SVC
1st Team, All-NEO 1st Team, All-State 1st Team, Ohio North-South
All -Star Game selection, and the R&R Mack Truck Lineman of
the Year. John received an athletic scholarship to Ohio State
University, where he played until 1982, John is single, lives
in Struthers, and is a laborer in Local #125. He also coaches
youth football for the Struthers Little wildcats.
