Fran Lyons, an outstanding athlete,
starred in four sports for the Cardinals. A three-year starter
in baseball, he served as captain. He played four years of basketball
well enough to lead the team in scoring and rebounding his senior
year. In track, he competed in the 880 relay team and in the broad
jump. But it was in football that Fran really made his mark. At
a time when football was in its infancy at Mooney, Fran was the
first Cardinal Mooney player selected to the All-City defensive
team. He also caught 24 passes that season and served as captain.
Lettering all four years at Youngstown State University, he saw
much playing time his first three years. As a senior, he started
every game at offensive and defensive end. Fran now retired, was
a part owner and Vice-President of Rimrock Corporation of Columbus
and is a founding member of the Catholic Foundation of Columbus.
He is married to the former Carol Mueller, a retired Professor
Emeritus of the Ohio State University. The have one son- Dr. Ken
Lyons, a pediatrician in Chicago.
