Don Maggs Postgraduate Achievement - Football - Class
of 1980
For most high school athletes their
teen years are the zenith of their athleticism. But, Don Maggs
just kept getting better. Blocking for Mooney’s vaunted running
attack. Don caught the eye of the Tulane University coaching staff
and was offered a scholarship to the Louisiana school. Don made
an immediate impression at Tulane becoming a starter as a sophomore
and was placed on the sophomore All-American team. Don continued
his fine play lettering two additional years, was All-Southern
Conference and played in the 1984 Senior Bowl. After college,
Don was drafted by the USFL, playing for the Pittsburgh Maulers
in 1984 and the New Jersey Generals in 1985, a year he was also
selected All-USFL. Drafted in the 1986 NFL supplemental draft
by the Houston Oilers, he achieved national attention blocking
for Warren Moon in the Oilers “run and shoot” offense. He earned
four Player of the Game awards. In 1993 Don joined the Denver
Broncos where he completed his pro football career in 1995. After
eleven years of pro-football , Don is now at Tulane completing
his degree in sports management. He is married to the former Josette
Lanese. They are the parents of two children, Meredith and Hunter.
