The graduation of John Lucente left
many Mooney fans concerned about who would handle the critical
center position in the Mooney offense in 1981. There was no doubt
in the mind of Mooney coach Don Bucci. Bob Maggs had won SVC honors
as a tackle during his junior season. His size, strength and agility
earmarked him as Lucente’s heir apparent... and the rest is history.
The Mooney’s “patented” I-formation continued to dominate the
line of scrimmage, tallying yardage at record rates on the way
to a 10-1 season. Bob’s flawless technique coupled with his tremendous
size and strength produced the type of player who would not only
garner All-SVC, All State, and Mack Truck Award recognition, but
would also be named Ohio’s Lineman of the Year, Parade High School
All-American, and Dial Athletic and Academic High School All-American.
Bob Maggs moved on to Ohio State where his distinctive athletic
career flourished. He was a two-time All-Big Ten center and an
Honorable Mention All-American in ‘85 and ‘86. He was selected
to play in the Ricoh Japan Bowl and East -West Shrine All-Star
games. Bob lives in Hilliard, Ohio with his wife, the former Marcy
Horn, and is the sales manager at Buckeye Staffing in Columbus.
