Raymond M. Mancini Postgraduate Achievement - Class of 1979
Although Ray Mancini participated in
football, basketball, and baseball at Cardinal Mooney, there was
never any doubt, even then, that it would be in the boxing world
that Ray would make his mark!
Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini was
the Youngstown/Cleveland Golden Gloves Champion in 1977, 1978,
and 1979. He turned professional in October of 1979, and began
his storybook quest to capture the world boxing title denied his
father. In less than three years, he reached his goal, defeating
Jorge Morales for the North American Boxing Federation title in
May of 1981. A year later, he defeated Arturo Frias for the World
Lightweight Championship. Throughout his quest, which was the
subject of a television movie, he carried the names of "Youngstown,
Ohio and Cardinal Mooney High School" proudly to the four
corners of the world, bringing pride to our community and recognition
that remains even today.
Ray retired from boxing in 1985 and
now owns his own production company in California. He and his
wife Carmen have two children and reside in Santa Monica, California.
