Statistics don’t begin to tell the
story of Al May’s value to Cardinal Mooney basketball teams in
‘74 and ‘75. A steady performer at a lofty level, you could count
on Al’s “double double” game in and and game out. No aspect of
Al’s game was lacking. He was among team leaders in points, rebounds,
steals, and blocks. He averaged double figures in points and rebounds
for his career and his blocked shot record stood for 15 years.
May’s pinnacle season in 1975 was climaxed with his selection
to the All-SVC 1st Team. His contribution as a team leader is
however, his greatest legacy. After graduation, Al moved on to
Stubenville College for his freshmen year and then transferred
to Westminster College where, according to his coach Ron Galbreath,
“Al was made of the right stuff: character, integrity, heart,
work ethic, honesty and trust. Alfred was team player all the
way (totally unselfish).” Al served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years
and then accepted a managerial position with the Tandy Corporation.
Tragically, Al May’s life ended from a heart ailment on September
23, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Tina, and children, Kelly,
Kody, and Kayla.
