Joanie Murphy was at the forefront
of Cardinal Mooney’s rise to prominence in area girls basketball.
Joanie was an outstanding scorer, rebounder, and leader on the
Cardinal’s teams of the late 70’s. Twenty years after graduation,
her mark of 315 rebounds in 1978 is still the standard. That year,
she led her team to the State District Finals where they lost
by 2 points to the eventual state champions. Joanie was a four-year
varsity starter, earning All-Diocesan honors her junior year and
repeated as a senior. In 1978 she as All-SVC 1st Team. In addition,
she used her considerable athletic skills for 3 varsity seasons
of track and field. Since graduation, Joanie has sought to develop
the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social skills of other
students and players as a coach. She earned her masters in Education
and until recently had been the girl’s soccer coach at Youngstown
State University. Joanie is now a health, Phys. Ed teacher and
head girls varsity soccer coach at West Potomac High in Alexandria,
Virginia.
