Joe Nigro
Class of 1963
Post-graduate Achievement in Basketball
While Joe Nigro was a very good basketball
player at Cardinal Mooney, he developed into a Hall of Fame roundballer
at Youngstown State University. Nigro hit the ground running (and
shooting) at Youngstown playing in 22 games as a freshman and
ended up as the #2 scorer on a 20-6 team. His next year, Joe didn’t
slack off. He again was the second leading scorer as he aided
the Penguins to a 19-7 mark. As a junior, Joe’s output went up
again, averaging 18.7 points a game and helped YSU post a 18-7
ledger. Nigro’s senior campaign saw him contribute 18.4 points
per game and unquestioned leadership on the way to a 17-8 season.
When the final buzzer sounded on his stellar collegiate career,
Nigro has scored 1564 points, averaging 16.3 per outing. He is
still ranked eight on the Y.S.U. all time scoring list. Joe Nigro
was inducted into the Y.S. U. Hall of Fame in 1993. Joe is currently
employed by the U.S. Post Office (Boardman Branch). He is married
to the former Judith Glasser. They have six children and two grandchildren.
