A slashing runner with an exceptional
ability to cut, Ray Sattler ranks as one of the finest all-around
athletes ever to attend Cardinal Mooney High School. He combined
sprinter's speed with toughness to absorb an opponents initial hit,
recover, and add an additional yard to the play. His four TD's against
Ursuline in 1961 powered Mooney to a 32-14 win and his 169 yard
effort against Chaney on eight carries in 1962 paced Mooney's 4806
victory. Defensively, he made a habit of pilfering opponents' aerials,
tallying nine interceptions his senior year.
He was an All-City and All-Diocesan performer
both his junior and senior years, averaging nearly seven yards per
carry. His career totals would have been even more remarkable if
he didn't have to share the football with two other Hall of Fame
inductees, Joe Mogulich and Joe Minotti.
Ray earned a football scholarship to
Miami of Florida and is now employed by Ohio Edison as Distribution
Dispatch Supervisor. Ray and his wife Lois have three daughters
and live in Hubbard.
