Arguably the finest pitcher ever to
play for Cardinal Mooney, Jim Strichek lettered all four years.
His high school record was 44-4 including two no-hitters. He averaged
two strikeouts per inning. Breaking the record held by his grandfather,
Jim set the district high school strikeout mark of twenty in a
seven-inning game. Jim didn’t need many runs either. His earned
run averages were 0.72 as a sophomore, 0.55 as a junior and 1.25
as a senior. He was a three- time All Steel Valley selection.
Originally Jim signed with the Cincinnati Reds, playing for two
years in their farm system before being traded to the St. Louis
Cardinals. In 1983 he joined the Oakland Athletics farm system
where he played for three years. In 1983 he also lead the South
Atlantic League in strikeouts and was selected to the league’s
All-Star team. He completed his minor league career with the St.
Louis Cardinal organization. Jim is now working for the Radisson
Hotel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He is married to the former
Elizabeth Gilbride.
