The new hybrid Mooney/Ursuline Ice Hockey team is made up principally
of students from the two Mahoning County Catholic high schools
and others from parishes that "feed" into the two schools.
Like other teams in the league - Boardman, Canfield, Poland - the
Mooney/Ursuline unit is a "club" team without direct sponsorship
or funds from the schools.
Sharon Spangle Sabatka, an Ursuline alumna, is co-founder, president,
and manager for the hockey team. The unusual unit was
formed a little more than a year ago by Mrs. Sabatka and a former
classmate, Doris Hutch. Mrs. Hutch and her husband, Tom, are co-partners
in the Ice Zone on McClurg Road.
The team rosters include more than 20 male and female players on
each of the varsity and junior varsity or freshman units.
This year's head coach is one of last year's players, Todd Smith.
Smith is assisted by former player, Allison Vodelko and her father
YPD Captain Mike Vodelko, Dan Colucci, Nate Chaszeyka, and freshman
coaches Tom Hutch and Dave Handel.
