NATIONAL MERIT AWARD

We are very proud to announce that senior Zachary Liptak has been named a National Merit Semifinalist in the 49th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.  Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state who took the 2002 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).  To earn this honor, Zachary placed in the top one percent of U.S. high school seniors who took the test.

Congratulations, Zachary! Read more about the National Merit Scholarship.

CLASS ACT PROGRAM

We have once again received forms to nominate teachers for the "Giant Eagle Class Act Award".  This program is in-tended to salute teachers who are making a difference in the education and lives of our youth.  Any student or parent can nominate a teacher.  The forms are available in the main office.

SCHOOL INSURANCE PROGRAM

Included with this mailing is a letter describing our school insurance program.  Please note that this is a supplemental program, requiring that you must first file a claim with any other insurance source first.

If a student is injured at school or a school-sponsored activity, the student must report the injury to school personnel (e.g., coach, teacher, nurse, principal) immediately.  Once the proper forms have been submitted by the main office, the insurance company will deal directly with the parents regarding the situation.

SCRIP PROGRAM

Cardinal Mooney High School recently announced the establishment of a voluntary Scrip Program.  Scrip order forms were mailed to every family along with an informational brochure.  The program is de-signed to be a school fundraiser and at the same time it will provide you a way to reduce tuition costs.  Your tuition account will be credited for the first 2% of all your purchases.  The more scrip you purchase the greater the impact on your tuition costs.  Remember scrip costs you nothing to use and the more you use the greater the benefit to yourself and the school.  By involving other family members in the program, you can multiply your benefits and reduce your tuition costs even more.

There are no minimum require-ments to participate.  You start earning credits with the first dollar of scrip that you purchase.  Scrip orders can be made through our Treasurer's Office.

Please note:  Scrip can be ordered ahead or purchased on site.  We have a supply of scrip on hand so that all orders can be filled immediately.  Also, we just received that we can offer $25, $50, or $100 certificates for Sheetz.  If you would like to order any of these, just write them in on your form.

CAREER DAY

This year the CMHS Alumni Association will again sponsor “Career Day” for members of our senior class.  On November 18, each senior will spend the morning visiting an alumni or friend of CMHS at his/her place of employment.  The students will have the opportunity to experience first hand the environment and activities of careers they are considering for their futures.  It should be a rewarding experience for our seniors, and we are grateful to the Alumni Association for providing this opportunity.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL FORMS

There are students who still have not turned in an Emer-gency Medical Form.  If your student was mailed a second copy, please be sure that he/she has returned it to the school nurse.

Theology   News

. . .       Opening of School Liturgy

On Thursday, September 4, we celebrated our opening of school liturgy.  We gathered at the table of the Lord to celebrate the theme of our school year:  “Our God is an Awesome God.”  In his homily, our celebrant, Father Terry Hazel, challenged us to use our hands and be about the work that our awesome God has set before us.  Within the liturgy there was a blessing rite on the new altar vessels that were given to Cardinal Mooney High School.  We ask a special blessing upon Father Hazel and our anonymous benefactor from Holy Family Parish for their generous gift of new vestments and altar vessels.

. . .       Marian Celebration and

Respect   Life

Observances

Throughout the month of October, our school community will focus on the gift of the Blessed Mother and the Rosary through prayer, song and catechesis.  Faculty mem-bers will reflect on the Holy Father’s letter on the Rosary and special dis-cussion on this letter will be made in all the theology classes.

October is Respect Life Month.  The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops write:  “By our Christian example and advocacy for public policies respectful of the human person, we can create a culture which affirms the miracle and glory of every human life.” Spearheaded by our Cardinals for Life group, we will join with Office of Pro-Life Activities in prayer and action.  Our students are encouraged to be part of the Life Chain on October 5th, which is Respect Life Sunday.  We will continue our com-mitment of service and outreach to all of God’s people during this month.

On October 16, the school community will gather for Morning Prayer to celebrate the closing of the 60th Anniversary Year of the Diocese of Youngstown.  Joining together with men and women of faith throughout our diocese, we will celebrate the close of the Year of the Rosary and the actual date of Pope John Paul II’s 25th anniversary of his Pontificate.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE CLUB

“No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”

The Cardinal Mooney Service Club is an organization open to students of all grade levels.  Its purpose is to encourage our students to volunteer for various projects both in the school and for the surrounding community.  The Thanksgiving Food Drive, Socks for Samaritan House, and our Lenten project are just a few of the many opportunities for in-school service.  Some of the community agencies we assist in a variety of ways are Second Harvest Food Bank, Easter Seals, Habitat for Humanity, Beautitude House, and the Special Olympics.  In previous years, we have wrapped packages, cleared lots, sorted clothes, delivered food, tutored grade school students, walked for the hungry, visited the infirm, and so much more!    Club moderators are Miss Karen Kerrigan, Mrs. Susan Trewella, and Mrs. Mary Lou Rogers.  This year’s Service Club Executive Board Members are:

Sheena Dohar
Elyse Healey
Nikki Modarelli
Melissa Cardon
Caitlin Kalasky

We already have 130 members this year.  So far we have had a fundraiser for Easter Seals, taken food to the Rescue Mission, had 8 members assist at the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament, and are looking forward to "Trick or Treat" at the Shops at Boardman Park on October 24.  Please encourage your student to join this volunteer group.

MUSIC MINISTERS ANNOUNCED

Cardinal Mooney's Music Ministers are a group of dedicated students who give of their time and talent to assist in liturgical celebrations.  They not only help lead the school in prayer but are also often called upon to lead song at liturgical celebrations throughout the Diocese.  The following students auditioned and have become leaders of song:

Jay Dehghani, Sheena Dohar, Jillian Giannios, Elyse Healey, Angelo Martinez, Jeannette Rodesky, April Sauline, Stephanie Brett, Katie Critell, Ashley Leonelli, Bethany Sauline, Brendan Trewella, Colleen George, Angela Rovnyak, Jeanine Awad, DiAndra DiBacco, Hilliary Hill, Gina Philibin, and Joe St. George.

Returning as an instrumentalist is sophomore Andrew Cerritelli.  Auditions for other musicians will take place in the next few weeks.  If you know someone who has a musical talent, please ask them to consider this fine ministry.  We are especially in-terested in anyone who plays the piano.  They may stop and see Mrs. Joanne Carney Smith or Mr. Ernie Formichelli for further information.

October is recognized as the Catholic Church’s awareness of the “Right to Life”.  The school’s club “Cardinals for Life” will join our Diocese to form a Life Chain as a prayerful, public witness to the precious value of human life and the harmful reality of abortion.  This will take place October 5, 2003 (beginning at the corner of Market and Midlothian from 2-3 p.m).

The purpose is to draw attention to the number of children in the United States killed through abortion, and to the second victim of abortion: the mother.  Cardinal Mooney belongs to Bishop Tobin’s Human Life Guild.

MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS

In consideration for our office personnel, we ask parents to limit phone messages for students to absolute emer-gencies.  Such messages will be accepted from parents only.

We also ask that if a student is to be excused before the end of the school day, a parent send a written excusal to be presented by the student in the main office before 8:00 a.m. on the day the student is to be excused.

CARDINAL’S  NEST

The Cardinal’s Nest is open each week during the following times:

            Tuesdays & Thursdays
            7:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.

            Fridays
            7:30 a.m.

Mooney letterman jackets are also available for purchase through the Cardinal’s Nest.

Visit the Cardinals Nest on-line.

PROGRESS REPORTS

All students will be receiving progress reports in all subjects each nine weeks.  The progress reports for the first nine weeks were mailed on Tuesday, September 30.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

In an effort to maintain consistent communication with our parents, we have scheduled four parent-teacher conference opportunities.  The dates and times are:

      October 7      5:45-8:45 p.m.
      December 10      3:15-6:15 p.m.
      March 3      5:45-8:45 p.m.
      May 12      3:15-6:15 p.m.

Teachers will be available in their classrooms to meet with parents about their students’ progress.  No appointments are needed!

SCHOOL DISMISSAL TIME

All parents are asked to note our school regulations which state that students may not remain in the school building unless under the direct supervision of a teacher or coach.  Parents are responsible for making trans-portation arrangements so that students are transported home within a reasonable time frame following the dismissal bell.

Presale tickets for away football games are on sale Tuesday through Friday in the Main Office, with Tuesday 8:30 a.m. to Noon open only to season ticket holders.  Please note that Cardinal Mooney keeps a percentage of presale ticket money for most away games but does not receive any percentage of gate sales for those games.  Help support our athletic pro-gram by purchasing your tickets here at school!

CALENDAR   LOTTERY

Now is the time to get a head start on Lottery Calendar sales.  The student sales campaign kicks off next month but families can get started right now by picking up calendars for sale in the Development Office, Room 214.  Remember, once a stu-dent’s quota is met, they earn a $5.00 bonus for each additional sale.  Bonus money can be credited directly to tuition.   Purchasers will receive coupons that can help them to defray the $25 purchase price.  Questions concerning the calendar fund-raiser should be directed to Mr. Paul Gregory  at 330-788-5113.  Remember, Lottery Calendars are the perfect gift for that “hard to buy for” person.

Fundraising plays a significant role in the total financial picture at CMHS.  While total per pupil cost is approximately $5,900, tuition, while significant at $4,500.00, would have to be higher if not for the fundraising efforts of our students.  Your continued involvement with and support of our fundraising efforts is appreciated.  Encouragement of your son’s or daughter’s participation in our fundraisers helps to create a recognition of their role in helping to underwrite the cost of a Mooney education.

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM

. . . Band

On August 14, 2003, your Cardinal Pride Marching Band marched at the 150th Ohio State Fair.  Eleven members represented the school at the 4:15 Toyota Daily Parade.  The band also was able to see Mrs. April Wood conduct the 2003 All-Ohio State Fair Band in playing The Stars and Stripes Forever.  Hats off to both bands for a job well done.

Seven Student Council members spent Thursday, September 25 at a Leadership Conference at Boardman High School.  The day was sponsored by Herff Jones and involved 9 area high schools.

In the second match, Mooney came from behind to defeat a solid team from Union in Pennsylvania by a score of 320 to 290.  A phenomenal second round score of 150 points in the speed round vaulted Mooney into a lead that they never relinquished.

Thanks go out to alternates senior Mike Quigley, junior Rob Wyman, and sophomores Cassie Pallai, Mike Perry and Dan Rotar who supported the team with their presence and provided important preparatory practice.  Thank you also to the Academic Club members who faithfully attended practice rounds, which will continue.
