Laz Frisone — Class of 2013

The Cardinal Mooney Alumni Spotlight showcases and recognizes outstanding Cardinal Mooney Alumni for their academic and professional achievements, service to their community, and continuation of Cardinal Mooney’s tradition of “Sanctity, Scholarship, and Discipline.” With the Alumni Spotlight, we will explore and regularly share the diverse accomplishments of our graduates.

In the ten short years since he graduated, Lazzaro (Laz) Frisone (CM 2013) has quickly excelled in his career as a pilot. From his earliest memories, Laz knew he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a career in aviation; his dad, Dan Frisone spent his entire 30 + year career in business aviation for the Eaton Corp.

Laz’s motivation and passion for flying led him to Kent State University, where he earned a bachelor’s in aviation with a concentration in Air Traffic Control. Laz took an aggressive class schedule to accomplish his personal goal of earning his degree in 3 ½ years. At Kent State, he was a student lab instructor and taught several courses in the Air Traffic simulator. Laz was also a member of Epsilon Rho Chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Beginning his career, Laz accepted a position with the Federal Aviation Administration and moved to Oklahoma City to work at FAA headquarters. During his time in Oklahoma, he worked in the Air Traffic Control hiring center, training Air Traffic Control candidates. In September 2017, he moved back to NE Ohio to work at Flexjet, a
corporate jet operator.

Today, Laz works in the Cleveland area as a corporate pilot for Quality Resources, LLC. He flies his clients to destinations across the country, sometimes flying in and out of 20 airports in a week’s time. He never tires of the frequent opportunity to view our beautiful country from the air; some of his favorite landscapes are in Alaska and New England.
In addition to his duties as a pilot, Laz is also the Director of Compliance for his employer, working with numerous Fortune 500 companies and various airlines, ensuring regulatory compliance.

Mooney Memories
Many of Laz’s fondest memories of Cardinal Mooney include Mooney football. He was a kicker and a member of the 2011 state championship team. He will never forget the evenings with his team, family & friends at the Victory Bell. Laz reflected, “The long days of practice and training throughout the year, coupled with high academic standards were an expectation at Mooney.” His high school experiences were foundational; very early he learned that hard work and dedication in all aspects of life, provide an opportunity to accomplish great things.

Christian Service class was also very meaningful for Laz. Giving back to others is at the core of a Cardinal Mooney Cardinal. Visiting the elderly, volunteering at Purple Cat and Summit Academy provided Laz with the opportunities to have a positive impact on the lives of others.

Personal Life
Laz married his high school sweetheart, Carlynn (Carly) Shutrump (class ov 2013) in September 2018. When he is not flying across the country, he is blessed to spend time with Carly and their two beautiful daughters, Amelia Poppy (age 2) and Dorthea Flora “Dot” (4 months). Laz’s siblings are also Mooney graduates: Kaila Frisone Waldron (2010), Connor Frisone (2015) and Hannah Frisone (2017). Carly’s older sister Alexis Shutrump Wadman is a 2003 graduate, and her father Charles Shutrump graduated in
1973.
