The annual Mahoning Valley Miniature Bridge Building Competition at Youngstown State University was held on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The event brought high school students together for an exciting, hands-on engineering experience! Mooney was well represented by seniors, Dimitri Zoumis, Fotini Pizanias, Frankie Cassese and Pierce Jones as well as juniors, Sam Scott and Lainey Hunt. Dimitri & Pierce are also part of Cardinal Mooney’s Engineering Academic Program.
In this fast-paced competition, alongside engineers from Mahoning County and Trumbull County, students designed and constructed balsa wood bridges, then put them to the ultimate test for strength and load efficiency. This event challenged our students to apply real-world structural engineering principles, think creatively under pressure… all while exploring future careers in engineering.
Congratulations to our talented students for winning the Richard Marsico Aesthetic Award for the second year in a row!
This event is one example of how our students in our Engineering Academic Program have access to enrichment outside of the classroom. What a fabulous partnership with YSU and a truly inspiring STEAM-focused event for our students. Special thanks to Mrs. Kandray and Miss Policy for their guidance and support in making this wonderful learning experience possible.
