A large percentage of Mooney students choose to include Honors/AP Courses to challenge themselves and to help enhance opportunities for college scholarships.

Honors/AP Courses

Honors courses offered within the English, Mathematics, Science, and Theology Departments are intended to challenge the academically talented and dedicated student. These courses involve an accelerated, in-depth approach to the subject matter and students are required to complete additional and/or more comprehensive assignments than those in the regular programs. To enroll in an honors course, students must meet the stated criteria and fulfill the prerequisites. Because of the additional course requirements, grades from honors courses are weighted in computing a students grade point average and rank in class.

Advanced Placement Courses

We offer 19 full-credit Advanced Placement courses. AP courses give students the opportunity to experience college-level academics while still in high school. They help build critical skills such as time management, scholarly writing, and problem-solving, while also strengthening a student’s college admissions profile.

Students who perform well on AP Exams may be eligible to earn college credit or advanced placement, saving time and money once they begin their degree. Colleges and universities vary in the minimum AP Exam scores they accept for credit.

At Cardinal Mooney, all students enrolled in AP courses are required to take the AP Exam in May. We believe this reinforces the purpose of taking the class, ensures students take the coursework seriously, and provides valuable experience in preparing for high-stakes exams.
