The history of Scholastic art and writing stems from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, founded in 1923 by Maurice R. Robinson to recognize creative teens, celebrating artistic talent alongside athletics. Managed by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, these awards have grown into America’s longest-running recognition program for creative youth (grades 7-12), fostering talent in various categories and launching famous careers for alumni like Stephen King, Sylvia Plath, and Andy Warhol through scholarships, publications, and exhibitions.
We are proud to acknowledge this year’s participants in the annual scholastic art and writing competition. This year’s show is located in the Solomon Gallery in Bliss Hall (Honorable mention winners on the 4th floor of Bliss) on the campus of YSU and is open January 7-24. The awards ceremony will be on January 24th at 12 PM at YSU’s Ford Theatre admission is free.

The American Visions Award in Scholastics is a top regional honor in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for visual art, recognizing outstanding originality, skill, and personal vision; up to five Gold Key winners from each region are nominated, and national judges select one artist per region to receive a medal, with the awards supporting teen artists with scholarships and national recognition, alongside its writing counterpart, the American Voices Award.
What it is:
- A prestigious award for teen artists (grades 7-12).
- Recognizes work demonstrating strong personal artistic vision, originality, and technical skill.
- It’s the highest regional honor in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
How it Works:
- Regional Gold Key: Students first earn a Gold Key in their regional competition for their art.
- Nomination: Regional jurors select up to five Gold Key-winning works to be nominated for the American Visions Award.
- National Selection: National judges review these nominees and choose one winner per region to receive the national American Visions Medal.
