YOUNGSTOWN — On Friday, Cardinal Mooney’s boys basketball team started their season off with a bang. They convincingly took down Liberty 64-23 in front of the home crowd. The Cardinals were led by senior Eddie Nieves with 16 points and junior Nico Genova with 14. The emphatic win is an excellent way to start the year and could set the tone for what is to come this year.

¨The win was huge. Coming out and starting the season that way is a huge confidence boost going forward.¨ said senior Ashton O’Brien ¨Nico played really well in his first game with the team he’s definitely going to be a big addition¨

The team is now refocusing on the next task at hand, a huge early season game against JFK. Kennedy also came out the gate swinging notching their first win against a tough Cleveland Central Catholic team.

¨This is a statement game for sure. I’m excited to play in such a big game this early in the year. Winning this game would really set the tone for the season.¨ O’Brien added.

Mooney is looking to start their season off strong with two early statement victories. Make sure to come support the Cards in their clash against Kennedy at home December 5th.
