How AI Is Changing Education

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming classrooms across the country, including schools in the Mahoning Valley such as Cardinal Mooney High School. From personalized tutoring programs to tools that help students organize assignments, AI is becoming a major part of modern education. While some people see it as a helpful resource, others worry about how it could affect learning and academic honesty.  

Many students say AI tools can make schoolwork easier and less stressful. Programs that explain math problems, summarize readings, or generate study guides allow students to learn at their own pace. For students who struggle with certain subjects, AI can provide extra support outside of the classroom. “AI helps me understand topics when I’m confused, especially in math and science,” said student Sophia Rotunno. “It’s like having a tutor available anytime I need it.”

At Cardinal Mooney High School, where academic programs include college-prep opportunities such as STEAM and College Credit Plus, technology could support students by helping them research topics, practice skills, and prepare for future careers. As schools continue to modernize, AI may become another valuable resource for students and teachers.  

Teachers are also beginning to use AI in their classrooms. Some educators use it to create lesson plans, quizzes, and practice activities more quickly. This can save time and allow teachers to focus more on teaching students directly. “AI can be a great tool when used responsibly,” said teacher Miss Dulik. “It helps teachers with planning, but it should never replace real instruction or personal connections with students.”

However, not everyone is fully supportive of AI in schools. Some critics argue that students may rely too much on technology instead of thinking for themselves. Others worry that AI could make cheating easier if students use it to complete assignments without learning the material.

Even with these concerns, AI is likely to remain an important part of education in the future. Like calculators or computers before it, artificial intelligence may become another everyday classroom tool. The challenge for schools such as Cardinal Mooney High School will be finding the right balance between using technology and maintaining strong learning habits.
