For more than five decades, Tom devoted his life to educating young people and inspiring a love of science. His
remarkable teaching career began in August 1959 when he joined the Cardinal Mooney faculty as a
chemistry/biology teacher. From the very beginning, he was passionate about helping students understand the
physical world around them and appreciate the wonders of science.

Tom taught generations of students until his retirement in 1995. Yet his love for teaching and his students never
faded. In 2000, he returned to the classroom as a part-time chemistry and biology teacher, continuing to share
his knowledge and enthusiasm with a new generation of learners. He remained in the classroom until his final
retirement in May 2011.

What set Tom apart was not only his mastery of chemistry and biology but also his unique ability to connect
with teenagers. He genuinely enjoyed working with young people and believed that learning should be both
meaningful and enjoyable. His classes were filled with energy, curiosity, and laughter.

Tom possessed a wonderful sense of humor, which became one of his trademarks as an educator. He used wit
and laughter to make complex scientific concepts easier to understand. Students often looked forward to his
classes, knowing they would learn something new while sharing a smile along the way.

Another cherished tradition was the way Tom began each class. He opened every class with prayer, often
offering it in a variety of languages, including English, Latin, Spanish, French, German, Greek, and Slovak.
This practice reflected both his faith and his appreciation for different cultures and languages, leaving a lasting
impression on countless students over the years.

Throughout his long career, Tom touched the lives of thousands of students. His dedication to education, his
enthusiasm for science, his sense of humor, and his care for young people made him an extraordinary teacher
and mentor. His legacy lives on in the many students he inspired to better understand the world around them and
to pursue knowledge with curiosity and confidence.

Tom’s contributions to education will long be remembered and celebrated by all who had the privilege of
learning from him and working alongside him. Tom passed away on June 5, 2026 at the age of 93.
