YOUNGSTOWN — As we celebrate 70 years of Cardinal Mooney High School, we look back at the Youngstown man whose name, and legacy, became part of our story.
Edward Aloysius Mooney came to Youngstown as a young boy, growing up on Poland Avenue in the neighborhood known as Kilkenny. He walked each day across the bridge and up the hill to attend St. Columba School, where the Ursuline Sisters recognized his extraordinary talent. Youngstown would remain close to his heart throughout his remarkable life.
In 1956, now His Eminence Cardinal Edward Mooney, Archbishop of Detroit, returned to his hometown for an important purpose: to help advance Catholic education in Youngstown. As this historic Youngstown Vindicator page shows, he served as the principal speaker at a rally to raise funds for the construction of a new Catholic high school on the South Side….the school that would bear his name.
Cardinal Mooney High School opened its doors in September 1956.
Seventy years later, his name still stands for faith, education, service and a deep connection to Youngstown.
