Teacher Appreciation Week Highlights Lasting Impact on Students; Part 1
By Francesca Cassese and Natalie Blasko
During Teacher Appreciation Week at Cardinal Mooney High School, students are recognizing the teachers who have made a meaningful impact on their high school experience. From academic support to personal encouragement, many say these relationships have shaped who they are today.
Many students highlight teachers who consistently go above and beyond in the classroom. English teacher Miss Cunningham is frequently recognized for her creative and immersive projects that bring learning to life. Her Romeo and Juliet-themed classroom is a standout experience that many students enjoy being part of. Freshman Nomiki Kefalianos shared, “She makes learning in her class so much fun instead of just working out of a textbook all the time.” Her ability to balance engagement with academic rigor is something students genuinely appreciate.
History teacher Mrs. Popichak is widely known for her positivity and constant encouragement. Junior Kaden Reese shared, “I enjoy going to Mrs. Popichak’s class every day because of the positive environment she has created. She wants me to do my best, and I feel like she truly believes in me.” Students also appreciate her support beyond the classroom, noting that she regularly attends school events to cheer them on.
In addition to her encouragement, Mrs. Popichak is recognized for her dedication to helping students succeed academically. Senior Olivia Hetson said, “She always offers extra help with assignments and gives up her time to make sure we understand the material when it’s needed.” Her willingness to support students both inside and outside the classroom has made a lasting impact on many at Cardinal Mooney.
Señora Bassil is another teacher students recognize for bringing energy and enthusiasm into the classroom. Junior J.T. Smith shared, “Her class is always something I look forward to. I love our daily reflections and constant connection to faith in class.” Students also appreciate the way she brings culture into her teaching through fiestas and celebrations. Freshman Nikola Frangos said, “The fiestas are one of my favorite parts of her class. It’s not just about learning Spanish, it’s about understanding the culture and actually being part of it.”
With so many teachers making an impact across the building, it’s impossible to capture every story in one piece. In Part 2, more students will share their appreciation for additional teachers who have influenced their time at Cardinal Mooney.
