Even with phones that can take perfect pictures in seconds, a lot of people are starting to use film cameras again, especially high school students. What used to seem old is now trending because the film feels more real and less rushed. You cannot see the picture right away, so you actually have to think before taking it, which makes each shot feel more important. Instead of taking a bunch of photos and picking the best one, people are more careful and present in the moment. The photos also have a different look, with softer colors, grain, and small imperfections that make them feel more genuine.

Ava Briceland, a senior at Cardinal Mooney High School, says that is what makes film stand out compared to using a phone. “With my phone I take so many pictures and barely care about them,” Briceland said. “With film, every picture actually matters more.” She explained that using film has changed the way she takes pictures and even how she remembers moments. “I think about what I’m taking a lot more now,” she said. “It makes memories feel more special because you cannot just redo them.”

She also likes that the photos are not always perfect or edited. “Sometimes the pictures come out blurry or too bright, but that is what makes them better. It just feels more natural,” she said. For many students, film is also a way to take a break from constantly being on their phones and posting everything online right away.

Even though film cameras can cost more and take longer since you have to get the pictures developed, many people think it is worth it. The wait and surprise of seeing how the photos turn out adds to the experience. For students like Ava Briceland, film photography is not just about taking pictures, it is about slowing down, being more intentional, and actually enjoying the moment.
